Bike riders to inundate town
MORE than 900 bicycle enthusiasts riding everything from road bikes and tricycles to tandems and mountain bikes will inundate Gympie on Friday afternoon.
Cycle Queensland is a recreational ride with participants ranging in age from children to people in their 70s. The visit to Gympie is expected to inject thousands of dollars in the local economy.
Organisers have been working closely with Gympie's council, tourism and business operators to ensure the region gets maximum value out of the stay.
Riders are expected to arrive around 5.30pm and make the most of what the town has to offer. Based on what has happened in towns already visited, cafes, bakeries and pubs will be overflowing with cyclists before they head south on Saturday for a stay in Cooroy before finishing at Noosa on Sunday.
Research conducted by Bicycle Queensland shows that riders spend an average of $35 a day. Multiply that by 900 and it adds up for local businesses.
Police and event organisers advise local residents and drivers to be aware of the bike ride route and try to avoid the roads as some delays can be expected. Cyclists will meet at Albert Park when they arrive.
