Bigger trucks could access road where horror crash unfurled
REPORTS of regular near-misses on Palmer Bridge have emerged in the wake of a horrific truck crash, but heavier vehicles could be permitted on Freestone Rd in the future.
A report from The Warwick Daily News says that B-Doubles are not allowed to utilise the road under current regulations due to load restrictions on Palmer Bridge.
But scheduled upgrades to Palmer Bridge and a proposed B-Double route could see heavier vehicles travelling through Freestone in the future.
In a statement to announce funding for the work, Maranoa MP David Littleproud said the new bridge would have two lanes, increasing the load limit from 42.5T to 166T.
A Southern Downs Regional Council spokeswoman said usage of a proposed B-Double route would be managed through a permit process through the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
"The usage of the proposed B-Double route will be for B-Doubles wishing to get onto Freestone Rd from Toowoomba way or from Warwick way," the spokeswoman said.
