Beware another phone call scam

BEWARE of offers of money from heaven or you may find your own hard-earned dollars have gone to hell.

This is the warning from Macauley’s Headland pensioner Lynton Thompson, who was rung with offers of riches on Monday.

“A woman with a foreign accent rang saying banks had been overcharging Australians and the government was refunding people $4851,” Mr Thompson said.

“She told me to ring Mr Richard Lee to find out more.

“I did that and Mr Lee said the transaction would cost me $224 and I should head down to the post office and ring him back when I got there.”

When Mr Thompson said he was ‘busy at the moment’ and would wait until Wednesday before doing anything, the man became increasingly pushy.

“He was very keen for me to grab a taxi – he was giving me a bit of a hurry up, which made me suspicious.”

The conversation finished there and Mr Thompson alerted Coffs Harbour Police about the scam.

He said even more disturbing was the fact the fraudsters apparently had his bank details.

“These people prey particularly on pensioners – it’s a rotten stinking thing to do.

“It makes me angry to think people will be caught out by this.

“I want to warn people to be alert to such calls.”
