Best selling car for 2016? It's going to be a ute

TOYOTA'S HiLux is on track to make Australian motoring history as it leads the way in the race to be our nation's best seller for 2016.

No utility has ever been crowned Australia's best-selling car, the award typically going to passenger cars such as Holden's Commodore, Ford's Falcon and, for the previous three years running, Toyota's own Corolla.

With one month remaining in 2016's new car sales race, Toyota holds the top two positions.

HiLux has sold 38,018 units and Corolla is snapping at its high-riding rubber heels with 37,403 units sold, a mere 615 behind.

Best of the rest for 2016 up to the end of November are the Hyundai i30 with 34,937 sales, Ford's Ranger ute at 33,567 and Mazda's 3 with 32,966 sold.

Toyota still dominates our national sales charts, and 2016 will see the Japanese giant be crowned top-selling automotive brand in Australia for the 14th year in a row and the 20th time overall.

It has sold almost 190,000 vehicles so far this year, a margin of more than 80,000 above Mazda, its nearest competitor.

Hyundai is currently our third biggest seller, Holden is fourth and Ford in fifth.

The changing landscape of Australian new-car buying habits will break new ground should Toyota's HiLux be the first ute to be crowned Australia's best-selling car.

As has been the trend in recent years, 2016 so far has seen SUV sales up 2.3% with 37.6% market share; light commercials (like double cab utes) are up 1.2% for a 18.5% market share, while passenger cars are down 3.5% for a 41.1% market share.

Guaranteed will be a decent party at Toyota HQ to celebrate either Corolla or HiLux being our nation's top seller.

The win will come as Corolla marks 50 years of Australian sales and HiLux 45 years of Australian sales.
