Bello flicks switch for Earth Hour

CITIES and towns across Australia turned the lights out last Saturday for Earth Hour.

Bellingen was one of 308 Australian municipalities registered as taking part, with many hitting local restaurants for candlelit dinners. The widespread participation in the shire was obvious by the darkness in the main street with less shop windows lit up, and in residential areas with hundreds turning the light switch off.

A substantial reduction in energy use was noted across Australia during Earth Hour, including a nine per cent cut in Sydney's CBD and 7.6 per cent in south east Queensland. This equated to a saving of 21.4 tonnes of carbon emissions in Sydney alone.

Participating businesses in Bellingen included: Betty May's Kitch at Bellingen Bowling Club, Cobblestones Restaurant at Bellingen Valley Lodge, Infusions of Fine Food and Art, Little Red Kitchen, Lodge 241 Gallery Café, Mai Thai Restaurant, Mouza Restaurant, No 2 Oak Street, Relish Bar and Grill at the Federal Hotel, Diggers Tavern Bistro, Emporium Bellingen and Bellingen Video Connection.
