Norm wins best orchid at show

BELLINGEN’S Norm Mitchell has nipped the competition’s bud to claim the grand champion prize at the Coffs Harbour Orchid Society’s show.

Mr Mitchell’s yellow orchid was chosen as best of the best at the annual show at the Coffs Harbour Botanic Garden this weekend.

“We’ve been delighted by the response from the public,” orchid society secretary Ed Pearce said.

“It’s been an excellent weekend.”

Young and old enjoyed the beautiful flowers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and members of the orchid society were on hand to answer a plethora of questions.

The Far North Coast Judging Council considered 112 entries for the top prize.

This is only the second year the show has been held at the Botanic Garden and Mr Pearce said it is a perfect location for such an event.

The society will hold its regular monthly meeting on May 6 at 7.30pm, in the meeting room at Coffs Harbour Botanic Garden.

View flowering orchids, learn more about growing orchids and enjoy a social get together over a light supper on completion of the meeting.

The guest speaker for the night will be Murry Shergold of Easy Orchids.
