Bellingen Youth Space is jumping

ANYONE for pool? Table tennis? How about just dropping in for some food?

It’s all happening at the Bellingen Youth Space . . . in fact, the place is buzzing.

Youth worker Alon Shmuel said the space is proof of the old saying ‘Build it and they will come’.

“Sometimes we open the doors and there are 15 kids, sometimes there are 40,” Alon said.

“Considering we haven’t had a space before, that’s a great turn-out plus there is a keen bunch of older kids who help with the supervising.”

For 15-year-old Anaan the space is a great place to chill.

“I like coming here to relax, make food and play pool . . . it’s a real home feeling,” he said.

And there’s more . . .

Volunteer Pat Whittingham brings her painting and sculpting skills with her every Wednesday afternoon and is starting craft workshops.

“The kids have said they are interested in printing T-shirts and fabric painting, so that’s what we’ll do,” Pat said.

Today Coffs-based rapper Ran MC will wrap up his series of holiday rap workshops.

He and some of his rapping mates have been hanging here this week teaching local youth the basics of lyric-writing, beat looping and recording.

“I grew up in Bello and there isn’t a lot for youth,” Ran said.

“Boredom is the main problem, so I decided this would be a good thing to do.”

The workshops will culminate in a 2BBB live concert at 2pm, another one in the Youth Space at 4.30pm (including a free barbecue) and a final energetic performance at the Bellingen Bowling Club from 8pm.

The Youth Space is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10am to 6pm. For information phone Alon on 0419 233 808.
