Organisers broken hearted over cancellation of River Festival

BELLINGEN River Festival organisers have announced the community event will not go ahead this year.

Lack of funding and volunteers were the key factors sited by the festivals committee members as the cause of the festival's cancellation.

The decision was "heart-breaking" for Bellingen River Festival co-ordinator, Ben Perrim, who said it's the first time in the event's five year history it's been cancelled.

Despite the cancellation, Ben said the committee remains optimistic and aims to explore different strategies to create a more sustainable future for the event.

They are calling on the greater community to collaborate with organisers to put forward ideas to support the continuation of the festival.

"Our committee is tired and extremely under resourced yet feedback ... also in light of the distressing turtle situation. 2015 is pausing to reflect ... (we're) looking for sustainable ways to fund and resource the River Festival and Community Parade into the future," Ben said.

It's been a bad year Bellingen festivals with the Jazz Festival also being scrapped in April for the first time since its inception 25 years ago.
