BECHTEL has built a replica tunnel boring machine out of Lego to inspire young people to pursue engineering careers.

The Lego replica, which is kept at Bechtel's London office, was built by Lego specialists Bright Bricks using 50,000 Lego pieces.

The two-metre long model shows all the components of a working tunnel boring machine and demonstrates how the machines dig and build tunnels around the world.

The model was created to celebrate Bechtel's involvement with First Lego League, an international robotics tournament for students aged nine to 16 years.

Only 2km to go until GLNG tunnel reaches Curtis Island

The competition teaches children to think like scientists and engineers by building autonomous robots and create innovative solutions to real-world problems.

Bechtel, which is building the three LNG projects on Gladstone's Curtis Island, hosted a robotics challenge for local school students last year, with Bechtel engineers helping students to learn the basics.

A tunnel boring machine is being used by Santos to tunnel under Gladstone Harbour, making way for a pipeline to carry CSG to the GLNG plant.

Lego is set to become even more popular with the release of The Lego Movie on April 3.

The computer-animated comedy features the voices of Will Ferrell, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman.

The storyline has stars such as Batman, Superman, Han Solo, Gandalf, the Simpsons, a Ninja Turtle and William Shakespeare.
