Academy kicks off 2010 season

THE first tournament on the Baylis Tennis Academy calendar saw 12 players travel to Glen Innes for the 2010 Far Northern Tennis Championships.

Some great results came from this tournament. Kelly Armstrong was runner-up in the final of the Women’s Special Singles being defeated by Kirsty Asseff. Kelly also won the Open Mixed Doubles Final with partner Luke Edwards, 9-6 and also defeated Nardia and Allan Pade in the Special Mixed Doubles Final with partner Adam Berrada 9-4.

The C Grade Men’s Finals saw Sawtell boys Nathan Repko and Rhys Johnston battle it out for the top spot. Nathan came out on top winning 9-7. Nathan also made it to the B Grade Men’s Finals only to be defeated by Gunnedah’s Dale Martin 9-4.

Rhys Johnston partnered by Casino’s Mick Sherry went down to Eli Baylis and Brodie Wood 9-8 in a very close final of the Men’s Special Doubles.

Alex Studley won the final of the D Women’s Singles, defeating Sophie McKenzie 9-2. Alex also made it to the Finals of the C Women’s Singles and C Women’s Doubles, but was defeated in both finals.

Eli Baylis and partner Allan Pade were defeated in the final of the Open Men’s Singles by Nathan and Brendan Moore of Lismore.

The Medibank Junior Development Series (MJDS) was off to a great start with players from the Baylis Tennis Academy again performing at their best.

The most recent MJDS was held in Taree and Forster. Kyra Carlyon was unbeatable all day winning 6-0 each match and going on to win the 10 Girls Final 6-0. Alex Studley defeated Westside’s Sienna Desalis in the 14 Girls Final 6-2.

Josh Farrell and Hudson Kacsics both made it to the Semi Finals of the 12 Boys. Josh was defeated by the eventual winner Blake Clarke and Hudson, who won his pool, was defeated by Jack Clarke.

The 14 Boys Final saw two Sawtell boys Rhys Johnston and Bill Childs play each other for the top spot. Rhys, after winning all his matches all day, came through on top winning 6-0.

This was Bill Childs’ first appearance in the finals of the MJDS.

Mitch Dunn made it to the Semi Finals of the 16 Boys, going down to the eventual winner, Jason Taylor 6-2. Matt Allen was defeated by Jason Taylor in the 16 Boys Final 6-2. Alex Raven made it to the quarter finals of the 16 Boys.

Kyra and Rhys have now won back to back MJDS titles.
