Coffs carnival this weekend

COFFS Harbour Basketball will host its annual junior odd-age carnival this weekend with more than 100 games of basketball.

Sponsored by McDonald’s, 43 teams will compete in the age groups of under 11 boys and girls, under 13 boys and girls, under 15 boys and girls and under 17 boys and girls.

Teams competing in the carnival are from Lismore, Grafton, Taree, Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour.

The Coffs Harbour teams have tasted success in all age divisions at the recent Grafton and Port Macquarie odd-age carnivals and to provide more competition for our own teams.

Development manager Matt Shanahan has asked head coaches of all age groups to select players who would benefit from playing in a higher age group at this carnival.

These players will be competing in the next age group for the Coffs Harbour carnival this weekend (i.e. the team selected from under 13s will compete in the under 15s age group for this carnival).

Some parents may be concerned about the size difference between age groups but Shanahan is recommending selecting players who have already shown they have the skills, ability and knowledge and on-court maturity to play up a level.

In the under 15 age groups, players will be mixed with current under 17s players to ensure balanced, well-rounded teams.

They believe this change will provide more even and challenging competition for all the Coffs Harbour teams.

The carnival gets under way at 8am on Saturday and finishes at 4pm on Sunday.

All games will be played at Sportz Central in Bray Street.
