Barnbougle isn't just for golfers

WHEN are we going back to Barnbougle?

If you placed a bet that these words were uttered by this golfing addict, you'd be paying up some dollars.

The words were actually said by my beloved, a woman who has barely swung a golf club in her life.

While Barnbougle's two courses right on Bass Strait, about an hour's drive north of Launceston, are voted regularly among the best in the world offering a golfing heaven of links golf by the sea, there's plenty on offer for those who don't play as well.

Both The Dunes and Lost Farm are ranked in the top10 Australian courses and regularly rated among the top 100 on the planet.

And with the pretty seaside town of Bridport and Anderson Bay providing a spectacular backdrop, it's no surprise.

While I was enamoured with the front nine on the Dunes course which I now rate as the best stretch of nine holes I've played (despite the strong Bass Strait winds that need to be countered), the better half was relaxing in the day spa at Lost Farm Lodge.

Overlooking the Lost Farm layout and Anderson Bay, Barnbougle Spa is a tranquil sanctuary for you to refresh, reflect and renew.

Set high on a sand dune the day spa, like the classy restaurant, overlooks the course and the Bay to immediately bring on relaxation mode.

With golf and the day spa finished for the day, it was time to briefly retire to our spacial room with an ocean view.

Next on the agenda to fill in the afternoon was a tour of the Pipers Brook vineyards.

For a fee the Barnbougle team will organise a mini van and a driver to take you to the cellar door of half a dozen wineries only a short 20-minute drive away.

The wineries don't mind if you're from the mainland either.

They're more than happy to courier home boxes of your purchases.

With the sparkling wines, and the crisp whites such as chardonnay, riesling, sauvignon blanc pinot grigio on offer, you're sure to buy a few bottles. There's even plenty of pinot noir for red lovers.

Dinner at Lost Farm was a delight. With mid-summer sunsets lasting until 9pm, you can sit in the restaurant watching the sun go down as you enjoy fine local produce and some more wine from an extensive and impressive cellar.

An early tee time the next morning, this time on the Lost Farm course, the round was just as enjoyable as the day before.

The fourth hole, a short par-3 with Anderson Bay and Bridport as the backdrop is a signature hole. Watching a sweetly hit short iron sail high toward the pin was a highlight.

While I was spending a day on the course, my better half enjoyed the very long walk along the beach that is on offer.

There are few 19th holes better than the Sports Bar at Lost Farm for a post round refreshment and snack while you relive the highs and lows of your time on course. Barnbougle golf

We met up again at the Sports Bar after my round.

As the Lost Farm layout has 20 holes, the Sports Bar is a 21st rather than a 19th but it's a great place for a post-round refreshment or snack.

You can even order a BBQ pack at reception and cook it up on the grill outside the bar.

There's plenty of hype about Barnbougle and it's justified.

Being two of the best courses in the world, there's every reason for golfers to head to the Apple Isle and play there.

But the secret is out guys, Barnbougle is a place for the girls as well.

Once you've taken in the view of Bridport and Anderson Bay from Lost Farm's 14th tee, it's decision time on what club to take on the short par-4. Barnbougle golf Photo: Gary Lisbon
