Balboa Rocks ready for tough tilt in Sunshine Coast Cup
HORSE RACING: The odds may be against Balboa Rocks but his tilt in the lucrative Sunshine Coast Cup comes with plenty of experience in the saddle.
The Darryl Hansen-trained gelding has drawn barrier 15 for the $125,000 race at Corbould Park on Saturday but boasts accomplished jockey Michael Cahill for the 1400m trip.
Cahill has a strong history at the course, having won the Caloundra Cup, Glasshouse Handicap and Sunshine Coast Guineas multiple times over the years.
He's won the jockey's premiership there too.
"It's one of my favourite tracks,” he said.
Balboa Rocks, based at Corbould Park, has recently returned from a spell and faces a highly competitive field in Saturday's race.
He's placed at $34 to win by bookmakers.
Cahill admitted he didn't know too much about the five-year-old and that it would be a tough race from the outside barrier.
However, he was hopeful his past success at the track would boost the roughie's chances.
"I'll watch some videos of him and talk to Darryl, he's a pretty good judge, so he will give me a good insight into Balboa,” Cahill said.
"He'll need a bit of luck but I've won feature races from that position before and I'm hoping he has a good race.”
Balboa Rocks won't be Hansen's only horse in the Sunshine Coast Cup, with Monsieur Gustave also set to jump.
The six-year-old heads into the race on the back of some major meets, having been in the field for the $1m Magic Millions Cup earlier this month.
He'll have Jim Byrne in the saddle.
Meanwhile, in the $125,000 2YO Classic Plate (1200m), Sunshine Coast trainer Stuart Kendrick will run Comogli.
He scratched stablemate Dark Archer from the race.
The Coastline BMW Sunshine Coast Cup Day will feature prize money of up to $870,000.
Local trainers will have runners in several events on the nine-race card.
