Police set target of 97,000 drug tests in 2017

BIG money is being funnelled into road safety, with police set a target of carrying out 97,400 roadside drug tests a year by 2017.

More than $309 million will be spent next financial year on tackling the road toll through increased police enforcement, education and road improvements.

Trials of in-ground pedestrian traffic signals to stop people crossing the road while staring at their phones have been allocated $250,000.

Another $20 million will be spent on rumble strips, barriers and line markings to reduce fatigue-related crashes.
