Backbench to get first say on carbon target

THE Abbott Government's post-2020 carbon emissions reduction target will not be released until the Coalition party room has its say.

Despite suggestions the new target would be released this month, Prime Minister Tony Abbott told reporters on Monday the government's party room would need to approve it.

While China and the United States have released their targets ahead of the Paris summit in November, Australia's commitment to the global task remains uncertain.

Mr Abbott said the government would reveal a strong, credible target for cuts to carbon emissions, rather than "airy-fairy promises" that other nations had already made.

The delay comes after senior ministers directed the Clean Energy Finance Corporation not to invest in wind power under its $10 billion program.

That decision angered Labor, which has accused the government of waging a "war on wind power".
