UPDATE: Police have found the mother of a baby girl who was found alone at a Gold Coast church this afternoon.

It is understood her mother was located in the vicinity of where the girl was found.

A member of the public located her around 3.20pm near the Uniting Church on Pines Lane.

The spokesman told Fairfax the child appeared to have been eating leaves outside the church.

Investigators are currently determining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

EARLIER: Police are asking the public for help to identify a baby girl found on the side of the road unaccompanied outside the Uniting Church at Elanora.

Around 3.20pm, a member of the public located the girl - thought to be between one and one-and-a-half years old - on Pines Lane, which is near the northbound lanes of the Pacific Highway.

The girl has been taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital with suspected dehydration. It is unknown how long she had been on her own.

The girl is described as Caucasian in appearance with blonde colour hair. She has stitches in her brow.

The girl can walk, but it's not clear whether she was left where she was found, nearby or if she lives near the area.

The Gold Coast Child Protection Investigation Unit is handling the matter and the girl is currently in police care.
