Jamie Oliver urges Australia to act on sugar tax

CELEBRITY chef Jamie Oliver has called on Australia to pull its "finger out" and follow the UK's lead in establishing a tax on sugar.

A tireless advocate for the introduction of the tax, Oliver took to Instagram to celebrate after the UK announced it would happen.

Urging other nations such as Australia, Canada and Germany to follow Britain's lead, he posted: "We did it! It's about time your governments got on this."

The chief executive of Australia's Obesity Policy Coalition, Jane Martin, told the ABC a tax on sugary drinks should be implemented to fight obesity.
