Australia Opals shine bright at Asia Cup

BASKETBALL: The sharp-shooting Opals will tackle North Korea in the quarter-finals of the Asia Cup in India after a stunning long-bomb display saw them advance through the pool rounds undefeated.

The Opals drained 12 of 20 three-point attempts in their 83-74 win over Japan with Marianna Tolo starring in her return from a calf injury.

The Opals trailed at the first break but lead 34-30 at half-time with Tolo exceptional with 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

New Opal Kelsey Griffin also impressed, contributing 16 points and nine rebounds in only her third match for Australia.

The Opals only need to win one more match to confirm their spot at next year's world basketball championships, with the top four at the Asia Cup automatic qualifiers.

Australia will play North Korea Thursday in their quarter-final outing.

In other matches, New Zealand will tackle Korea, China will play the Philippines and Japan will take on Chinese Taipei.
