Aussies miss out on new Apple iOS 8.1 update features

APPLE has launched the latest version of their mobile operating system, iOS 8.1, and has made it available for free download on the iTunes app store.

Sadly, the biggest feature to come with the update, Apple Pay, isn't even available in Australia.

Apple Pay works from taking a picture of a payment card (credit, debit et cetera) and, after verification, you can use those cards by tapping your phone like a paywave card can currently be used.

Many of the features launched with 8.1 were absent from 8.0 while Apple got around to releasing their desktop operating system, Yosemite.

It's that link that creates the first obstacle to 8.1. You need Yosemite installed to use some of the new features, which restricts the usefulness of the upgrade for those who don't have an Apple desktop.

Apple Pay, once it launches in Australia, will also require an iDevice with NFC capability, meaning an iPhone 5S or higher.

More positively, 8.1 brings the return of the camera roll, a feature that had been sorely missed. With it comes the new iCloud photo library.

Gottabemobile.com is reporting that the sheer number of downloads has caused download failures and verification stall-outs as Apple's servers struggle under the load.

It's the kind of problem most major digital releases experience and will diminish over time, even if it does cause significant annoyance in the meantime.

Apple's iOS 8.1 is currently available on the iTunes App Store.
