Aussie writer wins international award

THE literary world is singing Tasmanian writer Richard Flanagan's praises, after his latest book, on his father's experiences on the Burma Death Railway, won the prestigious Man Booker Prize in London on Wednesday.

Flanagan, the third Australian writer to win the international literary award, said The Narrow Road to the Deep North was the "book I have to write".

The book follows Flanagan's father's story as a Japanese-held prisoner of war who worked on the Thai-Burma Railway.

Thousands of prisoners died due to torture, starvation and cholera.
