Aussie stands tall alongside LeBron

HE has become the most unlikely hero.

Born in country Victoria, Matthew Dellavedova grew up in Western Australia and dreamed of playing in the AFL.

He eventually found basketball and became good enough at it to play for Australia at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Despite that achievement, and a record-breaking career for California's St Mary's College, Dellavedova was overlooked by all 30 teams in the 2013 NBA draft.

He managed, however, to get a Summer League gig with Cleveland - and the rest, as they say, is history.

This morning he will line up alongside LeBron James and his Cavaliers teammates in game one of the best-of-seven NBA finals against the Golden State Warriors.

Led by MVP guard Stephen Curry and Aussie big man Andrew Bogut, the Warriors are trying to end a title drought stretching back to 1975.

But Cleveland has never won a championship and victory would complete a fairytale for the city and Dellavedova, who was given cult hero status after scoring 19 points in the series-winning game-six playoff match against Chicago.
