Aussie Sharks secure key water polo win

AFTER a sound 13-3 thrashing from Hungary, Australia's men's water polo team have bounced back with a win.

The Sharks kept their quarter-finals dreams alive with a narrow 11-10 victory over France at the world championships.

Aaron Younger and Lachlan Hollis lead the charge for the Aussies with three goals apiece in the tight affair.

World No.9 Australia and world No.20 France were locked at 6-6 at halftime before Australia secured a two-goal lead by the end of the third quarter.

"You could see high anxiety on both side," Sharks coach Elvis Fatovic said.

"There were ups and downs for both teams.

"We made some naive mistakes in the last quarter. Without those we could have finished this game much earlier, but that's quite a good lesson and experience for us."

Australia next face fifth-ranked Italy in their last preliminary-round match.
