Bodyboarder seriously injured after shark attack

A BODYBOARDER has suffered serious injuries following a suspected shark attack at Lighthouse Beach in Port Macquarie on Saturday afternoon.

Just before dusk a 38-year-old man was body boarding in the water when he was attacked by what is believed to be a shark, police said.

The man was assisted out of the water and treated at the scene for stomach and back injuries by ambulance paramedics. He was taken to Port Macquarie Hospital.

Police have received no further reports of attacks and all beaches in the area remained closed yesterday.

Locally the good weather was bringing people back to the ocean despite unconfirmed shark sightings, Surf Life Saving Duty Officer Jimmy Keogh said.

Yesterday there were two unconfirmed shark sightings, one at Lennox and the other at Byron Bay.
