Asbestos in 58 Northern Rivers schools - here's the list

ASBESTOS in its three most common forms - white, and the more dangerous brown and blue varieties - has been found in 58 schools across the Northern Rivers.

While this may seem alarming, products containing asbestos were commonly used in the construction of residential buildings in Australia between the 1940s and late 1980s because of their fire resistance and insulating properties.

Across the region there are thousands of homes and buildings containing asbestos, which is only potentially fatal when damaged or disturbed.

Two types of asbestos building materials are used in construction, bonded asbestos and friable asbestos.

Bonded asbestos materials were commonly used in houses, bonded with another material such as a cement or resin binder.

Banned in Australia in 2003, friable asbestos products must be removed by an authorised contractor with an A-class licence, while bonded asbestos requires a seperate licence.

A Lismore Catholic Schools' office spokesman said an audit of all schools in the region conducted over the past two years saw all schools cleared for exposed asbestos.

While there is no public register of asbestos in private schools across NSW, there is one for NSW government schools.

A NSW Education Department spokesman said parents of students in NSW government schools could be assured the Department and their local school had the health and safety of their students, staff and employees as their highest priority.

"Schools would appear on the Department's register if it was detected, or if there was a possibility that asbestos material existed on school grounds," he said.

"The Department's asbestos register provides information about the location and management of asbestos-containing materials.

"The majority of materials containing asbestos are safe provided the material is left undisturbed and is in sound condition."

The asbestos register is updated annually and is publicly available at http://www.dec.nsw.gov.au/about-us/supplying-to-us/asbestos-register
