Arter battles on after baby daughter’s death

REPUBLIC of Ireland international Harry Arter was one of the heroes in Bournemouth's shock 2-1 win over Manchester United, playing his best game of the season just days after he and wife Rachel lost their baby daughter at birth.

The 25-year-old was close to tears after being booked in the 84th minute, and was embraced by manager Eddie Howe when given an early shower two minutes later.

"I just felt that coming in and trying to take my mind off things would make it a little bit easier, and my family would want me to play," he told the club's website.

"While people maybe grieve in their own way, I found it easier to come in and play and try and do everyone proud."

Firmly in the relegation zone two weeks ago, the Cherries became just the second team in Premier League history to beat Chelsea and Manchester United back-to-back, jumping to 14th on the table in the process.

The loss capped a disastrous week for United and manager Louis van Gaal, with the Red Devils sent packing from the Champions League mid-week after a 3-2 loss to Wolsfburg.

That prompted the players to cancel their Christmas party which had been scheduled in Manchester last night.

The news was better across town where a late deflected goal by Yaya Toure gave Manchester City a 2-1 win over embattled Swansea, which was playing its first game since sacking manager Garry Monk.

Former Swan Wilfried Bony opening the scoring for City, but Swansea looked to have secured a point when Bafetimbi Gomis slammed home an equaliser on 90 minutes.

The win sent City to the top of the ladder, with Swansea just a point above the relegation zone.
