Around the Block and back

KEN Block says it's all right to be a hoon, his numberplate even says so, but when it comes to public roads 'safe driving is paramount'.

The American World Rally Championship driver, internet sensation and co-founder of DC shoes, took time out yesterday to speak with Coffs Harbour High students about road safety awareness.

Renowned globally for his Gymkhana You Tube videos and live stunt driving shows, Block's words of wisdom appeared to carry weight with Gen Y drivers and those waiting to get their licences.

"I would definitely warn against anyone doing something reckless on the road," Ken said.

"The Gymkhanas are staged in controlled situations, the best thing for young drivers is to always stick to the road rules. You don't rally on open roads, we don't."

Accompanied by 13-time WRC round winner Mikko Hirvonen, Block promoted the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport's Ignition driver awareness program. Ignition is co-funded by the world motorsport body, the FIA, and is part of the Decade of Action on Road Safety Scheme - a bid to reduce the global road toll by 50% by 2020.

From playing role models to rally, it's back to business for Hirvonen and Block today with the opening Rally Australia - Coffs Coast super special stage around the harbour tonight.

Quizzed on the Coffs Coast's stages, Hirvonen and Block were full of praise.

"There's some spectacular countryside here and challenging roads, looking forward to it getting started," Block said.

All of the World Rally drivers and co-drivers will meet with the public at today's Rally Show in the Coffs Harbour City Square at 4.30pm.
