Arkan joins federal fight

HIGH-PROFILE Woolgoolga identity John Arkan is a surprise addition to the field of Cowper candidates for the federal election.

The Coffs Harbour City councillor metaphorically threw his turban into the ring as an independent yesterday.

“I want to be a voice in Cowper to represent local people,” Cr Arkan said shortly after nominations closed. “I think we are missing out on a lot of funding.”

Cowper voters will have the choice of five candidates on August 21. Early nominations Luke Hartsuyker (The Nationals), Paul Sekfy (ALP) and Dominic King (The Greens) will be joined in the race by Mr Arkan and Boambee’s Deborah Lions, who will be standing for the Christian Democratic Party (CDP).
