Arkan only try again
SURPRISE packet, John Arkan is convinced an independent candidate will one day win the seat of Cowper based on his success at the polls.
The Coffs Harbour city councillor, a first time candidate won 10 per cent of the primary vote, surprising many political analysts with his showing of 7,657 votes.
"I am extremely happy to have run and given people the choice of an independent," Mr Arkan said.
"It appears Cowper is prepared to support the idea and it’s wonderful to see democracy in action."
Mr Arkan said independents are the way forward for Cowper, pointing to the benefits Lyne MP Rob Oakeshott and New England MP Tony Windsor will bring to their electorates in the event of a hung parliament.
"Whether its a vote for John next time or a vote for another independent I still believe an independent member is the best way to go, realistically its the best way for this country to develop especially if they hold the balance of power.
"In terms of Cowper I just hope the carrots that were dangled by The Nationals are actually delivered over the next three years.
"Congratulations to Luke, I hope he comes through with the pre-election promises that were made and I hope more is delivered, frankly I believe not enough has been delivered to the electorate," he said.
