Arkan faces court over non-payment of rates

COFFS Harbour City councillor John Arkan is being taken to court for not paying his rates. He is one of five people facing action over the non-payment of rates totalling more than $7000.

Documents obtained by the Coffs Coast Advocate reveal Cr Arkan among a list of defendants in the action being taken by the Clarence Valley Council for the payment of outstanding land rates on a Halfway Creek property.

The other names on the Statement of Claim are G.G. Singh, M.S Arkan, P.K. Bains and S.K Bhangal.

The address for all five is listed as c/- River Street, Woolgoolga.

According to the documents, when the Statement of Claim was registered in the Small Claims Division at Kogarah Local Court on February 13 this year, the total being sought by the council was $4577.10. Of this, $4149.30 was the claim for the unpaid rates, with the rest of the total made up of fees and solicitors' costs.

A Clarence Valley Council rates notice issued on October 24 this year listed the total due on the property as $7023.60.

It is understood that one of the five parties – not Cr Arkan – has made partial payment of the debt.

The Advocate contacted Cr Arkan yesterday but he declined to comment on the issue.

A spokesperson for Clarence Valley Council confirmed action was being taken to recover the outstanding amount.
