Apology is accepted
THE NSW Government has welcomed the apology from the British Government to the thousands of children from Britain and Malta sent to Australia between 1937 and 1967.
An estimated 10,000 child migrants were sent to Australia.
“About two and half thousand of these children were sent to NSW,” said Minister for Community Services Linda Burney.
“They were taken from their families, communities and country and sent to the other side of the world to spend their childhoods in children’s homes and orphanages. Who can forget those images of young, scared and bewildered children disembarking at Australian ports – many struggling with suitcases as big as themselves?” she said.
