Your blood is worth bottling

THE Australian Red Cross Blood Service has issued an urgent call for people to donate blood over the coming days as national stocks are at their lowest winter levels in four years.

There is less than 32 hours supply remaining of types O and A, and the ARCBS has advised hospitals that unless supplies improve blood transfusions may need to be prioritised.

Robin Osborne, a spokesman from the North Coast Area Health Service, said the Coffs Harbour Health Campus was aware of the situation and although there were no plans to cancel elective surgery it would be monitoring the situation closely.

Operations Manager Sharon Callister said stocks of all major blood groups in hospitals were at critical levels.

Those in desperate need of blood in the coming days will be those having surgery, cancer patients needing treatments and mothers having babies.

If you can give blood phone the Red Cross Blood Bank today on 6651 6844.
