Young surfers hit the water in Coffs

ALAN Wright from the South Coast was one of the standout surfers as Diggers Beach in Coffs Harbour hosted the first day of the Balance SURFNSW State junior titles yesterday.

During the 24 first round heats of the under-16 boys, Wright posted scores of 9.5 and 8.5 to progress to the next round.

Others to show good form on the opening day were Dean Bowen from the South Coast and Justin Cummings from the Central Coast.

Another exceptional performer on day one was one of Australia's best under-16 surfers and Rip Curl team member Wes Bainbridge along with David Vlugg from Sydney's Northern Beaches.

Locals to perform well were Luke O'Connor from the Mid North Coast and Far North Coast competitor Brett Savage.

Conditions for the opening day featured good one metre waves with strong left and right peaks.

Some of the waves were described as 'fat' which often made maneouvres difficult. The second round of the boys under-16 competition and the opening round of the under-18 boys division will be held today with the girls taking to the water on Friday featuring local girls Angela Keighran and Kirra Townsend.
