Young surfer on national campaign
THIS year is already shaping as a huge one for gun Sawtell surfer Cameron Hiscox.
With a little help from local businesses, it could get even bigger.
Along with the 2005 National titles, Hiscox is hunting victory in the Suzuki Pro longboard tour, but he needs a little help along the way.
The 16-year-old has started his competition in the right way, winning the under-18 and nine foot amateur open divisions in the tour's first leg at Coffs Harbour last month.
The five-leg tour now heads to Western Australia then Victoria before wrapping up in Byron Bay on July 2-3.
That's where local businesses can kick in and help out.
Hiscox is confident that if he can get to Western Australia for legs two and three (at Mandurah on April 16-17 and Denmark on April 23-24) he can take out the title.
But he needs some extra funding to get there.
"It's a pretty big one to win, it could really put me on the map," Hiscox says.
"They take your four best results (from the five legs) to determine the overall winner, so it is important I compete in Western Australia."
Winning won't just give Hiscox's already growing profile a huge shot in the arm, it will also result in direct entry to national titles.
"If I win I'll go straight to Aussies and not have to qualify through regionals and state," Hiscox says.
National titles are his other major goal for 2005.
"That has been a goal for a while now, probably about three years," he says.
"For the last few years I have been a bit too young for nationals (Under-18s), but I am old enough now.
"I qualified for nationals last year at Bells Beach as first reserve, but affordability meant I couldn't go."
The former John Paul College student ? he finished school last year to get a carpentry apprenticeship and to spend more time on his surfing ? already has a strong stable of sponsors, including Astro surfboards and Sunpatch surf shop, Sawtell.
"Sunpatch have really looked after me and they have already been doing raffles for me, Mark and Amanda have been right behind me," Hiscox said.
