Woolgoolga rugby desperate for win
THERE still remains a glimmer of hope for the Woolgoolga Whitepointers in their bid to reach the semi finals in this year's village Far North Coast Rugby competition. A last minute win against Iluka has kept them in the running for the semi finals but they desperately need to win this afternoon against the big Kyogle side to keep their chances alive. The match against Iluka from all reports was a struggle for field position. The only points in the first half came from two Iluka penalty goals. It was once again the defence of the Woolgoolga side that held the Iluka side out, as they have done all year the Whitepointers defence has been rock solid. Ball possession was the key to the day in the conditions and changing the style of play to wet weather rugby at half time payed off for the Woopi side. Some smart field position and quick pick and drives from the forwards in the last minutes of the game seen Woolgoolga go over next to the posts right on full time thanks to captain Gary Deacon. A pressure conversion after the full time siren in the rain was no problem for Sam Murgatroyd with Woolgoolga coming away with a 7-6 win. The old cliche of playing for the full 80 minutes will certainly be sticking in the Iluka side's mind. Best and fairest on the day went to secondrower Stu Lindsay (1) for some good hits and runs around the ruck,. fullback Scott Donohue (2) for a set of safe hands in wet weather all day and some great runs through the Iluka defence and big number eight Jamie Murgatroyd (3) for a solid game at the back of the pack and strong work around the park in the rucks and mauls. Players player and winner of the lovely shirt/dress/fairywinged shirt of shame went to fullback Scott Donohue. The Whitepointers play their final home game for the season against the strong Kyogle side today. The Whitepointers have to win on Saturday to have any chance of reaching the semi finals. Kyogle have a big strong forward pack and are currently equal second on the ladder so Woopi will have to muscle up and take it to their rivals. Woolgoolga's backline is starting to work well together so it will be up to them to capitilise on the good foundations being set by the forwards. The Woopi frontrow will have their work cut out for them, but as they do every game they match it with much bigger experienced packs so hopefully this day will be no exception. Saturday is also sponsors' day with all our sponsors welcome to the game. Refreshments will be provided to show our appreciation for their support for the year. The Whitepointers 'Back To School' fundraiser will be held on August 12 at 7pm in the sports bar at Woolgoolga RSL. Come dressed in your school uniform and rock the night away, tickets $35 per single and $60 double includes beer wine and nibblies, available from Woopi RSL and The Meat Palace also today at the game. Todays game kicks off at 2.30pm Centennial Oval Woolgoolga so come along and support the Whitepointers last home game of the year. Refreshments available with free entry into the ground.
