Win for golden Gropers

THE Coffs Gropers surprised everyone, including themselves, with a comprehensive 30-10 victory over South Auckland's Red Foxes in Wellington on Wednesday at the Golden Oldies Rugby Festival.

The Gropers got off to a great start with four tries in the first 20 minutes blowing the Foxes away.

Inside backs Warren Hughes, Andrew Rengger and Geoff Monaghan were on top of their opposition and created plenty of space.

After his controversial send off on Monday, Pat Magann was elevated to captain and led the team to victory with a try after backing up centre field.

The Foxes attacked for most of the second half but the defence from the Gropers was outstanding with Steve Wirihana, Dave Robertson and Trevor Bailiee prominent. Both sides scored two tries in the final 20 minutes.

The Gropers have been rewarded for their efforts and now go into the final match undefeated in their pool and will play the last game of the tournament against local Wellington team, The WAGS.

The Gropers have three players in doubt with injuries ranging from a broken nose, stiches to the head and a hamstring strain.
