Win a 'family' affair

CORINDI Red Rock soccer star Jo Powell's career highlight used to be scoring a goal for Australia.

But that achievement now sits at number two behind the Breakers' emotional NSW Champion of Champions victory over Grays Point on Sunday.

"This would be the highlight, we wanted it badly," Powell said.

"I don't really know how to put it into words.

"It was pretty emotional and it was a bit surreal afterwards. I think it will be a week or so before it sinks in.

"Scoring a goal for Australia used to be my highlight, but this probably tops it.

"I don't want to rag on the Matildas, but the feeling in this team is like nothing I have ever experienced."

Powell believes the close bond between the Corindi girls was a key factor in their success.

"We are all best friends off the field, we're like a family," she said.

"I think that made the win a bit more special as well."

Just a few months ago, Powell and her Corindi team mates were distraught after losing the Holiday Coast grand final to Coffs United Lionesses.

But she says the side drew strength from that loss.

"It was pretty heart-breaking," she said. "But if we didn't lose the grand final, I don't think we would have wanted the Champion of Champions as much."
