Weight wait for Zagalia

WITH last year's Carlton Draught Coffs Harbour Cup winner Champion System unable to defend his title because of a likely career-ending leg injury, leading Sydney trainer Clarry Connors is looking to 2003 Queensland Oaks winning mare Zagalia to give him backto-back Coffs Cups.

Owned by John Singleton and Sydney vet Gerry Rose, Zagalia was a controversial scratching from last year's Melbourne Cup after she failed to finish in the Caulfield Cup, with stewards citing a tendon injury and not a suspected heart problem as their justification for the withdrawal.

It was a decision which left Singleton very disappointed as the Zabeel mare had run a stout fifth in the Melbourne Cup the previous year.

This year Connors is preparing Zagalia for another trip to Melbourne and might use the Coffs Cup to keep her 'ticking over', although the handicapper could affect a final decision on a Coffs start.

The presence of Zagalia in the 2005 Coffs Harbour Cup will be another drawcard for this year's race and give Conners' wife Maree an extra chance to visit her father Frank who lives at Sawtell.
