Sunrise's day of surprises

By KAT MULLARD

IT was a close encounter with Calamity for Sunrise weather presenter, Monique Wright, at the Pet Porpoise Pool yesterday. Monique was in Coffs Harbour to present the weather live from the pool, as well as to enjoy the attractions. "Monique had a swim with two of our dolphins, Bucky and Calamity, and a kiss from our sea lion, Maxine," pool marketing manager Shane Ferguson said. "Sunrise really seemed to enjoy themselves. Solomon, our big sea lion, even told a joke for them." As well as communing with the resident animals, Monique also met some of the other locals.

"We had a massive turnout -- the grandstand was completely full, and there was a lot of interaction with both people and animals on the day," Mr Ferguson said. "We had a competition for the best placard, with the winner receiving a free seal swim." Although it was a placard that read 'Kochie, I love waking up to you' (referring to Sunrise presenter David Koch) which took the prize, it was a message of a different kind which caught Monique's eye. "Monique's dad, a local from Urunga, popped in with a sign to surprise her. It read 'Monique is a problem child'," Mr Ferguson said. Luckily, Monique appreciated the joke and the broadcast ran smoothly.

"The weather was good, and the water temperature great. We got lots of feedback from all around Australia. All in all it was a great morning," Mr Ferguson said.
