Spellbound Jarrod

By CRAIG McTEAR

WHEN it comes to words, Jarrod Chakos, pictured above, has spelt quite a few in his time - and there aren't many which manage to elude this young wizard.

The 12-year-old is such a good speller he's made it to the state final of the prestigious Premier's Spelling Bee.

The Year 6 Sawtell Public School student flew to Sydney yesterday ahead of today's competition, which pits him against the best of the best in NSW.

Jarrod will do battle against 30 other regional winners at the ABC Centre in Ultimo.

To get this far, he had to win his class, school and regional events, which he did in style.

He said he had been practising each night ahead of today's final, and was 'pretty excited' about the opportunity to put his skills to the test.

The competition was open to students in NSW public schools and had two divisions for juniors in Years 3 and 4, and for seniors in Years 5 and 6.

When he's not involved in spelling bees, Jarrod can be found playing basketball or swimming.

He's also accomplished at maths, and recently won a maths competition at his school.
