Six named in U18 AFL squad

By BRAD GREENSHIELDS

SIX players from the North Coast AFL competition have been chosen to represent Northern NSW in the upcoming Australia Day Cup challenge.

Strong performances last weekend by the North Coast AFL under 18's team saw the local team win two of their three matches and the selected six players are now off to Canberra for a competition which amounts to a very early season guide to state selection.

The future looks bright for reigning North Coast premiers Sawtell as three of the six players chosen represent the Saints through the winter.

Tristan McCormick, Todd Matthews and Michael Bibby all progressed through to the representative team as did Woolgoolga's Evan Duryea, Jeremy Ward from the Coffs Swans and the winner of last year's league best and fairest, Jesse Schmidt from Port Macquarie.

This was the first time a North Coast under 18 squad was ever selected and the win over the strong Newcastle league is proof enough of the ever increasing strength of junior AFL in the region.

It was only a couple of months ago that Lennox Head junior Wayde Mills was selcted by the Brisbane Lions in the AFL's National Draft.

For the six boys chosen to play for the Heat, selection in the state squad could bring that dream even closer.
