Silver sedan suspect

GAVIN Brown says a silver sedan may hold the clue to a suspicious fire in a Coffs Harbour Jetty unit on Thursday night.

The senior constable is investigating the cause of the $100,000 blaze which claimed the top floor of the three-story unit on the corner of Edinburgh Street and Moore Street.

Const. Brown said residents saw a silver sedan driv- ing slowly past the seven-unit complex under construction a short time before the fire broke out.

Coffs Harbour Fire Brigade captain David Spagnolo and his troops swung into action at 10.20pm and were assisted by Sawtell firefighters.

"We saw flames coming out of the top storey of the second unit," Mr Spagnolo said.

"We brought the fire under control within 30 minutes but stayed on scene until 1.10am to make sure hot spots didn't spring up."

The two other floors of the unit had water damage, while adjoining apartments had 'cosmetic' damage.

Const. Brown is urging anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area on Thursday night to contact him at Coffs Harbour detec- tives on 6652 0299.
