IT takes something special to leave John Charles Kerr, Coffs Harbour's town crier, speechless, but that is exactly how he found himself at the weekend.
Attending the World Town Criers Championship in the Queensland city of Maryborough, Mr Kerr said he 'sat like a stunned mullet' when the judges awarded him second place.
"I had gone hoping to finish in the top 25 per cent of competitors so finishing second really did leave me speechless," he said.
More than 65 town criers from nine countries entered the championship, which was won by an entrant from Belgium.
Each was marked on qualities such as clarity, diction, inflection and dignity.
Mr Kerr recited cries about Coffs Harbour, the host city and his own choice, Australian billiards legend, Walter Lindrum.
