'Screaming Kites' swoop off Coffs

JUNIOR sailors from around the state will turn out in Coffs Harbour this weekend when 'Screaming Kites' race in the ocean waters off the Jetty. The dinghies will be rigged and launched from Coffs Harbour Yacht Club and co-organiser Sophie Warburton said the event has a proud history.

"The late Ray Babbage initiated the first regatta six seasons ago and Ray was a great supporter of junior sailing," she said. "The race is conducted in open seas just north of Muttonbird Island and several classes of crewed boats are taking part, all flying a 'kite', another name for a spinnaker." Racing will be held on both Saturday and Sunday with race times available from the Yacht Club.

Best viewing points are from the North Wall or on top of Muttonbird Island.
