Sawtell breaks drought

TWENTY-eight long years.

That is how long it has been since a Sawtell first grade rugby league team appeared in a grand final.

But that is the past and after yesterday's victory all that matters is the present ? and the future.

In what was a great weekend to have the post code 2452, Sawtell residents had two big reasons to celebrate.

The party started on Saturday with the Sawtell Saints taking home the North Coast AFL premiership for the second year in a row.

Celebrations yesterday reached fever pitch with the Sawtell Panthers defeating the Woolgoolga Seahorses 30 to 22 ? securing their spot in next weekend's Group 2 Rugby League grand final showdown with Port Macquarie.

Head Panther Craig Wallace looked stunned when told he'd created a slice of history.

"These blokes are all a bunch of champions," captain-coach Craig Wallace beamed when reality hit him.

"They keep plugging away and don't know how to give up."
