Rate rise approved

By LEE McDOUGALL

SIT down as this news may shock some readers: Coffs Harbour City Council and Nambucca Shire Council have received ministerial approval for a special rate rise.

Both councils have previously requested special rate variations in recent years, to no avail, but yesterday the Minister for Local Government, Kerry Hickey, announced Coffs Harbour will get its 9.56 per cent rate increase while Nambucca will receive its 6.11 per cent increase.

Both councils are planning on spending their extra income on infrastructure.

"This outcome will take Coffs Harbour into a new era," Coffs Harbour mayor Cr Keith Rhoades said.

The rate rise will go towards:

ncompleting the Hogbin Drive extension;

nredeveloping Brelsford Park as a City Park;

nbeautification works, footpath construction and traffic-calming measures for Nana Glen;

nconstruction of the Nana Glen Swimming Pool;

nrestoration work on the historic Coffs Harbour Jetty;

nfurther improvement works totalling $400,000 for Woolgoolga Town revitalisation project and similar works, worth $300,000, for Sawtell;

nconstruction of two new bridges ? Coral Street Bridge, Corindi and Middle Creek Bridge, Sawtell.

Nambucca mayor Cr George Hicks said the rate increase was 'a step in the right direction'.

'We've only been given the rate increase for one year, instead of four, but we've got a lot of roads and bridges that need repairing," Cr Hicks said.
