Port authority way to control harbour

By BELINDA F SCOTT

LOCAL control of the harbourside needs to be introduced, says the Coffs Harbour Chamber of Commerce.

The president of the Chamber, Peter Lubans, said a port authority, with local community representation, should be implemented to control the management of the harbour precinct.

He said if this was not done, in the long run the local community would lose control of its own harbour.

The establishment of a port authority is a central point in the Chamber's submission to Coffs Harbour City Council on the Harbourside Concept plan.

The Chamber also wants to see the development of a long-term plan for the enhancement and management of the harbour and foreshores and no sale or leasing of parks and ovals.

Further, the Chamber submission says that issues in relation to the Harbour project highlight the lack of an overall strategic plan for the future development of Coffs Harbour.

Mr Lubans, who was a member of the steering committee for the concept plan, said the committee had not met for 12 months before they were presented with the con- cept documents.
