SHAUN CANSDELL is stoked to have his face on the cover of the 2006/2007 White Pages phone directory.

The professional surfer from Mullaway recently qualified for the 2006 World Championship Tour, which is comprised of the top 45 surfers in the world.

"It's really great that surfing is being recognised as a sport in this way," he said.

"I hope it encourages other Australians to get involved in the sport.

"I didn't realise how many copies my face would be on, but I think it's pretty amazing and I'm honoured."

White Pages group marketing manager Megan O'Dwyer said sport was a unifying force to many Australian communities and a tremendous source of motivation and ambition.

Shaun was one of 59 'Aussie Sporting Heroes' chosen to feature on the directories, which celebrate outstanding Australians who have made significant contributions to sport and the community.

Ms O'Dwyer said in the year in which Australia hosted the XVIII Commonwealth Games, Sensis, publisher of the White Pages and Yellow Pages, decided to celebrate the integral role sport played in Australian communities.

The new directories will be arriving on people's doorsteps over the next six weeks, with the first books delivered last week.
