Nana Glen win U13 cricket premiership
By BRAD GREENSHIELDS
HAVING the title all wrapped up with a couple of rounds to go was no reason for the Nana Glen under 13s cricket team to take their foot off the pedal.
The team that trains in the most basic of conditions at Karangi Public school proved that not having proper nets to train in was no excuse to not go through the season undefeated.
Coach Sean Kelleher is in awe of the ability of the boys in his team to transfer their skills from a grass (not turf) wicket at practice to the hustle and bustle of a match.
Geordie Scott as an all-rounder had an incredible season scoring the most runs for the premier team but also taking 12 wickets at the astonishingly low average of 2.75.
Another all-rounder who proved himself an integral member of the team was Martin Kelleher who averaged 37.5 with the bat as well as taking 14 wickets with the new ball.
In a committed team environment, wicketkepper Ben Gentle and Darcy Homan proved to be key players for the Nana Glen unit as they consistently managed to score runs as well throughout the season.
A good percentage of the boys are able to play next year in the under 13 team so there's a possibilty that a very strong crop of juniors is being developed in the western parts of town.
