A 38-year-old Nambucca Heads man has been charged with murder following the death of a 45-year-old woman at the weekend.

The woman is believed to have died as the result of a violent domestic incident at a house in Sussex Street in Nambucca Heads.

Police reported that they arrived at the house about 8.25pm on Saturday after reports of a domestic related incident.

Inside the house officers found the body of a 45-year-old woman with multiple injuries.

A crime scene was established and examined by forensic officers from Coffs Harbour.

A 38-year-old Nambucca Heads man was arrested at the house and taken to Macksville Police Station for questioning.

He was charged with murder and refused bail.

He was due to appear in Port Macquarie Local Court yesterday.

A witness who was in Sussex Street on Saturday night told the Advocate police searched the area around the house until the early hours of Sunday morning, including lifting drains and going through garbage bins.

The witness said he believed the officers were looking for a murder weapon.
