Moore Park golfer wins Bonville Cup
LOCAL knowledge wasn't needed for visiting amateur golfer Luke Henwood from Moore Park Golf Club in Sydney who claimed the 2006 Bonville Cup, held over the weekend at the famed Bonville International layout.
Winner of the 2005 North Coast Amateur event last year, Henwood seems to enjoy golf on the Coffs Coast, and it's no wonder when he finished with gross 143 (one under).
The 2006 Cup attracted four players from the NSW Golf Association state squad ? local Jason Barby, Rhys McGovern, Tim Stewart and overall winner Luke Henwood.
The State team took a clean sweep of the podium at the 14th annual event, with the 2006 Australian Amateur Champion and current holder of the NSW Cup, Tim Stewart claiming second place behind Henwood with a pair of 72's (total 144).
Third place was Rhys McGovern of Coolangatta-Tweed Heads Golf Club who finished with gross 147.
The general manager of Bonville International, Brad Daymond, said it was a great opportunity for the players to challenge Australia's most beautiful golf course.
"We had over 130 players from all over NSW, all eager to tackle the 'new' layout," he said.
This was the first tournament to be played on the new par 72 layout, after the 2nd hole was replaced by the old 17b recently and was a perfect opportunity for a 'new' course record to be set.
This was achieved by overall winner, NSW state squad player, Luke Henwood who shot a great two under final round 70.
Henwood joins fellow squad player Jason Barby who won in 2004 and local touring professional Paul Sheehan who won back to back Cups in 1997 and 1998 at the prestigious tournament.
Local Bonville member Matt Gosling was the Division 2 Winner with 82 points in the 36 hole stableford competition.
Gosling set up an unbeatable lead heading into the second round after scoring a massive 48 points on Saturday.
He finished eight points clear of Andrew McGuiness who ended up with 74 points.
